Grain Saver

Mobile, cost-effective and flexible storage solutions for wet and dry grain. A complete concept, based on many year’s practical experience, developed for all climatic conditions and needs around the world. A system for which there are one hundred reasons to why it would not work or be suitable, but which at the end of the day, is the most cost-effective and flexible grain handling system available around the world.

Low fixed-rate level, tremendous flexibility, good work environment with little dust problem, easily maintained and with great combination possibilities with existing drying and storage system is what distinguishes the Grain Saver concept. The global growth rate, especially on emerging markets and around the world has led to a growth of almost 400% per year. No other system is so flexible for storage of cereals!

Farm Mac and Eurobagging has close to ten years of experience of on-site storage of wet and dry grain in silo bags. A technology we have brought forward a lot in recent years by the introduction of the new line of grain carts, grain bagger and extractor. The technique is very simple and is based on air-tight storage of grain at modest moisture levels (up to 18%) or through acid preservation (over 18% moisture content and up to 40%). We have delivered a wide range of facilities to large farms and grain traders in Eastern and northern Europe, with customers who put a few hundred thousands of tons of grain per year, to smaller farm holdings in Scandinavia for the storage of both dry and wet grain. We have also worked as contractors in Scandinavia and through this, on high-cost markets requesting high efficiency, have developed state-of-the-art grain bagging technologies. Labour needs are at a minimum and costs hence can be further decreased also on emerging markets, following our knowledge and competence.

Today we can offer you our new grain bagger for wet and dry cereals (D-9, D-9 WG) with a bagging capacity exceeding 200 tons/h, and modified grain extractor (the Koyker) with a capacity of more than 200 tons/h. Such capacities are rarely achievable in practical operations: a rational set up, filling the grain bagger with two grain carts, seldom reach more than 150 tons of grain bagging at an average (incl stop, start, sealing of bags etc) and extracting the grain to trucks is hard to reach more than 170 tons per hour. Bagging grain with one grain cart of Grain Saver 24.5 can however support two large combines doing around 150 tons/h with one driver operating the grain cart and the grain bagger simultaneously.

The technique is very simple and in relation to most other storage solutions, the investment in a bagger and a grain cart means that the lion's share of the costs for the system are assigned to variable costs (staff, silo bags, fuel etc). For those who already operate a grain cart at their operations, adding a bagger means cheap investment for huge potential grain storage. Our experience is that if five farms choose to invest in a bagger, all of them can make use of one extractor for the entire needs of the group of farmers; hence reducing the investment needs further.

A large-scale grain storage depo, with mobile reception of grain, cleaning devices, laboratory, scale etc can be established in about 10 days, creating huge opportunities for expansion of central storages in remote areas. In many countries, the storage technology is well-adapted for livestock farms and grain growers with or without grain driers, whom is lacking storage capacities or whom consider such installations as far too expensive to build or invest in.

How it works

The use of the Grain Saver System and silo bags, means storing in a modified atmosphere, unlike such storage solutions as flat-storage, metal bins, concrete silos and similar, where oxygen is constantly in contact with the grain. You can store both wet and dry grain in the Grain Saver System, but the technology is different for the two options.

Much of the oxygen is removed already upon bagging, remaining oxygen is consumed successively in the silo bags by the grain, fungi and insects and hence oxygen is transformed through cell breathing into carbon dioxide. Roughly, after 30 days, a balance is reached between oxygen concentration and that of the carbon dioxide. After about 45-50 days, cellular respiration, in principle, come to a standstill and the silo bags is now so full of carbon dioxide and hardly any insects has survived inside the silo bags.

The technology to be selected is entirely dependent on subsequent use; For example acid preserved whole grain is considered to be well suited for use in wet feeding systems for pigs while the crimped grain have their main supporters in the milk-, beef- and sheep production, often in combination with mixer wagons. The dry grain on the other hand, can be sold for the livestock sector, to millers, for the storage of seeds, malting barley etc. which creates greater flexibility and keeps more doors open for the farmer.

Main advantages

The main advantages of storing dry grain with the Grain Saver Storage solutions solution are:

  • Low initial investment costs for the storage system,
  • Extremely high capacity of storing and extremely cost-effective technique to store marginal yields that would otherwise require enormous investments to manage in traditional systems,
  • Improved harvest logistic’s – grain is readily placed in safe storage, costly transports in season can be run later in season when cost of logistics are often significantly reduced,
  • Improved working conditions; the work takes place outdoors in the fresh air and not indoors in dusty environment,
  • Increased flexibility in a volatile world market; giving farmers the opportunity to sell grain when prices are high and store when prices are low,
  • Great flexibility to store a variety of crops, even in very small volumes which contributes to – and makes feasible - a more flexible and market-adapted crop rotations, or for managing disperse smaller quantities such as often found in the seed business and similar,
  • Problem with insects in long-term storages and needs of disinfection disappears because no storage bins or premises are left untidy prior to season.

All in all it is by far the most flexible, cost-effective and efficient system for handling grain found aroud the world.
